Speaking: Keynotes, Panels and Workshops

Amy O'Leary has spoken at over 75 events, nationally and internationally, on topics related to digital journalism, multimedia, attention, the impacts of algorithms on journalism, storytelling and building a career in journalism in the digital age.

MAJOR PRESENTATIONS

"From Scheherazade to Snapchat: Ancient Storytelling Practices that Win the Internet for Good" from The Online News Association 2015 Conference.

In an age where algorithms determine much of what we see, there’s a scramble to “reinvent” storytelling, but taking the long view (and we mean a really long view), Amy explores how the most fundamental mechanisms driving human curiosity can be found in ancient texts and applied to our modern world.

"Digitally Addictive Storytelling and the Brain" (2012)

In this presentation, given at the Power of Narrative conference in Boston in 2012, Amy discusses the brain and its relationship to immediate news. As a writer who crafts the online narrative of a story at the time the idea is conceived, she is uniquely skilled to speak to the power of social media in the news
